The Fashion Departments I Remember Most at Marshall Field’s

The Fashion Departments I Remember Most at Marshall Field’s

When most people talk about Marshall Field’s, they often remember the holiday windows, the famous clock, or cherished family traditions. While those memories are important pieces of Chicago history, my memories center on something different. Whenever I stepped through the doors of Marshall Field’s on State Street, I was there for fashion.

Long before I became a fashion blogger, Marshall Field’s was my classroom. It was where I learned about personal style, discovered quality clothing, and developed an appreciation for fashion that still influences me today. Every department offered something new to admire, whether I was browsing for the latest denim trends, dreaming about designer shoes, or exploring the beauty counters.

Looking back, these are the fashion departments I remember most.

The Women’s Clothing Department

The women’s clothing department was always my first stop. Walking through the neatly organized racks felt like entering a world of endless possibilities. No matter what fashion trend was popular at the time, Marshall Field’s seemed to have an incredible selection.

During the early 1990s, I loved browsing through racks filled with oversized flannel shirts, baggy denim, slip dresses, sweaters, and casual separates. Fashion was changing, and Marshall Field’s offered a front-row seat to those trends. Every rack felt like an opportunity to discover a new look or reinvent my style.

One of the things I appreciated most was the variety. Whether someone preferred classic styles or wanted to experiment with newer trends, there seemed to be something for everyone. I could spend hours moving from rack to rack, imagining different outfits and combinations.

Even when I wasn’t planning to buy anything, browsing the clothing department was entertainment in itself. It was a place where fashion inspiration came naturally.

The Sale Department

If there was one department that always felt exciting, it was the sale section.

There was something thrilling about searching through markdown racks in hopes of finding an unexpected treasure. Sale days at Marshall Field’s created an atmosphere unlike anything else in the store. Shoppers were focused, determined, and always hopeful that the perfect item might be waiting just around the corner.

Some of my favorite finds came from those racks.

I remember searching for Levi’s jeans, especially Levi 501s and other popular styles of the era. Finding a quality pair of jeans at a reduced price felt like winning the fashion lottery. It wasn’t just about saving money. It was about discovering something special before someone else found it first.

The sale department taught me an important lesson about fashion: great style isn’t always about spending the most money. Sometimes it’s about spotting possibilities where others might overlook them.

The Outerwear Department

Living in Chicago means developing a serious appreciation for outerwear.

Marshall Field’s had one of the most impressive coat selections I can remember. During the colder months, the outerwear department became a fashion destination all its own.

I loved browsing through rows of wool coats, cashmere coats, leather jackets, and winter outerwear. Some pieces were practical, while others felt purely aspirational. Every coat seemed to tell a story.

I still remember admiring tailored cashmere coats with their elegant silhouettes and luxurious textures. They represented the sophisticated side of Chicago fashion. At the same time, leather jackets offered a completely different attitude. They felt confident, stylish, and timeless.

The outerwear department reminded me that a coat wasn’t just something you wore to stay warm. It could be the centerpiece of an entire outfit.

The Handbag Department

Although I often focused on clothing, I never passed up an opportunity to browse the handbag department.

There was something fascinating about seeing rows of structured leather bags displayed beneath bright department store lighting. A beautiful handbag had the power to transform an outfit instantly.

Even when a particular bag was outside my budget, I enjoyed studying the craftsmanship, colors, and details. Marshall Field’s exposed me to brands and styles that helped expand my understanding of fashion accessories.

I learned that accessories could be just as important as the clothing itself. A thoughtful handbag choice could elevate an otherwise simple outfit.

Years later, that lesson continues to influence how I approach style.

The Cosmetics Department

The cosmetics department felt glamorous.

Unlike the clothing departments, which encouraged browsing at your own pace, the beauty counters created a more interactive shopping experience. Bright lights reflected off glass displays filled with lipsticks, powders, fragrances, and skincare products.

I loved exploring the different makeup counters and seeing the season’s newest products and color collections.

The cosmetics floor always felt energetic. There was movement, conversation, and excitement everywhere. It wasn’t unusual to see shoppers testing colors, seeking beauty advice, or discovering a new signature fragrance.

For a fashion lover, the cosmetics department offered another form of self-expression. Makeup allowed you to complete your look and experiment with different identities.

It wasn’t simply about beauty products. It was about confidence and creativity.

The Shoe Department

No visit to Marshall Field’s felt complete without spending time in the shoe department.

If the clothing department provided inspiration, the shoe department provided possibility.

Rows of boots, pumps, flats, loafers, and sandals stretched across the floor. Every style offered a different personality and purpose.

I especially remember admiring high-quality leather boots. Chicago winters demanded durable footwear, but that didn’t mean style had to be sacrificed. Marshall Field’s carried shoes that balanced practicality with elegance.

The designer collections were always fascinating to explore as well. Even when certain styles felt out of reach, simply seeing them helped me understand quality construction, design, and craftsmanship.

I often saved the shoe department for the end of my shopping trip because it felt like the grand finale.

More Than a Department Store

Looking back now, I realize Marshall Field’s gave me more than clothes, shoes, coats, makeup, and accessories.

It gave me inspiration.

Every department introduced me to new ideas about fashion and personal style. Every shopping trip encouraged me to look more closely at details, fabrics, colors, and silhouettes. Without realizing it at the time, I was developing the fashion sensibility that would eventually become part of my identity.

That’s why Marshall Field’s remains such a meaningful part of my story.

When I remember those trips to State Street, I don’t just remember shopping. I remember learning, dreaming, and discovering who I wanted to become. From the clothing racks to the beauty counters and from the outerwear department to the shoe floor, Marshall Field’s was more than a store.

For me, it was the first place that made fashion feel magical.
