AISHA’S FASHION FAVES

Living for the looks, the culture, and the thrill of the find — shopping Chicago since 1993.

A stylish flat lay fashion editorial photograph on a clean white surface. The items include: a pair of black distressed denim jeans with knee distressing, a pair of stonewashed light blue denim jeans, a fitted white t-shirt, and a fitted top. No brand labels, logos, or text visible anywhere on any of the clothing items. Soft natural lighting, editorial fashion photography style, neatly arranged items with slight overlapping, shot from directly above.

From School Halls to State Street: The Day I Discovered a Sale at Marshall Field’s

It began, as so many great fashion stories do, with a magazine. Pages dog-eared, editorials memorized, glossy spreads studied like scripture. That particular winter — Chicago, 1998 — the fashion world was deep in its love affair with leather: sleek, structured, unapologetically bold. And somewhere between the glossy pages and the frost gathering on my windowpane, a quiet conviction took hold. I needed to be where the clothes were: under the bright lights, amid the racks and mannequins and possibility. Not wanted. Needed. The kind of afternoon that feels like a scene from a movie, where you step into a store and something unexpected finds you.

The season was shifting — that particular kind of raw Chicago cold that settles into your bones and reminds you that winter is not a suggestion. The sky hung low and silver-grey, the kind of sky that makes the city look like a film still. Light snow flurries drifted down Belmont, unhurried, almost decorative. Word was a blizzard was on its way. But before it arrived, I had somewhere to be. There was only one destination worthy of such a pilgrimage: Marshall Field’s on State Street. The grande dame of Chicago retail. The cathedral of style, and, if you were lucky, the site of the kind of sale that could change your whole season.

I rode the bus through the grey city streets, watching Chicago move past the fogged windows — bundled figures, storefronts strung with light, the particular electricity that comes just before a storm. At the Red Line station, I descended into the rumble and warmth of the platform, the old turnstiles clicking with practiced familiarity. The train arrived in a rush of wind and noise, and I stepped aboard with a single-minded purpose for State/Lake and Marshall Field’s.

I told myself I would just browse and see what was available as I stepped through Marshall Field’s doors and made my way to the 4th-floor denim department. Racks of denim and tops stretched before me, a sea of blues and blacks in every wash—distressed, stonewash, and more—inviting my fingers to trail along the hangers. As I ran my hand over each piece, familiar labels caught my eye: Calvin Klein, Guess. Their jeans were marked down a bold 70% OFF, and beside them, Calvin Klein and Guess tops shared the same irresistible markdown. In that moment, I felt the quiet thrill of discovery, as if the perfect find had been waiting there just for me.

My hands moved with purpose through the racks, drawing the treasures toward me: Calvin Klein and Guess denim, their price tags slashed by a merciful 70%. The tops followed—crisp, fitted, waiting. *I couldn’t pass it up; it was a steal.* The words felt like a small prayer of gratitude, a whispered acknowledgment of something rare. I lingered in the denim department a moment longer, letting my fingers drift across other hangers, other possibilities, but something told me I had already found what I needed. The hunt, that particular ache of wanting, had been satisfied. I pulled away from the racks with deliberate restraint.

The fitting room was my private theater. I began with the Calvin Klein blacks—those distressed-at-the-knee jeans that whispered of rebellion, paired with a fitted Calvin Klein top that met them like a lover’s embrace. The mirror told me everything. *Yes.* Then came the second act: stonewashed Guess denim, pale and luminous under the fluorescent light, paired with a white Guess tee, both pieces settling onto my frame with an almost supernatural precision. Both pairs fit like a glove—no tugging, no compromises, no settling. This was the moment fashion lives for, that rare convergence of desire and fit, of wanting and having. *FASHION FAVE.* The words rose up inside me unbidden, triumphant, true.

At the register, I settled the bill like a final flourish, and a moment later I stepped back onto the street, my treasures gathered neatly inside a green Marshall Field’s shopping bag—a small, glossy trophy swinging at my side, the perfect ending to a perfect shopping story.
