AISHA’S FASHION FAVES

Living for the looks, the culture, and the thrill of the find — shopping Chicago since 1993.

A flat lay photograph of a heavy black leather three-quarter length coat with a lush faux fur collar, laid out flat on a clean white surface. The coat is spread open to show the full silhouette, the faux fur collar is prominent and luxurious, shot from directly above in crisp editorial fashion photography style.

How I Found My Holy Grail Winter Coat at Marshall Field’s Chicago

It started the way so many of my best fashion adventures do — curled up in my room, flipping through the glossy pages of fashion magazines, losing myself in the looks. The models wore coats that swept the floor, draped over their shoulders like armor. Outside, the air had that familiar crisp edge that whispers one thing: the seasons are shifting. I needed a new coat. Not just any coat — the coat. A black leather coat, substantial and commanding. I knew exactly where to find it: Marshall Field’s on State Street in Chicago, my ultimate fashion destination.

I grabbed my bag and headed straight for the Red Line. The platform hummed with the city’s restless energy, and when the train arrived, I squeezed in with the crowd — commuters, shoppers, tourists, all pressed together in that familiar downtown shuffle. Every single stop felt like it lasted an eternity. I watched the stations tick by, willing the train forward, my heart already somewhere on State Street.

Finally — State/Lake. I stepped off the train, climbed the stairs, and emerged into the electric pulse of the city. The street stretched out before me, alive with sound and movement, and I walked down State Street with purpose. Before I even stepped inside, I paused and looked up. There it was: the iconic Marshall Field’s clock, its face gleaming above the entrance like a guardian. I always looked at that clock when I visited. Maybe it was a gentle reminder not to lose all track of time once I stepped through those doors — a warning I rarely heeded.

I walked into the store like a predator scenting prey. I was on a mission: a black leather coat, three-quarter length, heavy and luxurious, with faux fur gracing the collar. No detours, no distractions — just me and the coat department. I cut straight through the aisles to it and let my eyes devour the display. My hand moved slowly along the rack, fingers grazing each coat — feeling the weight, the texture, the promise of each one.

And then I saw it. Black leather, three-quarter length, with a luxurious faux fur collar that promised warmth and drama in equal measure. It was stunning — the kind of coat that makes you stand still and just stare. But this was Marshall Field’s, and beautiful things came with serious security. The coat was anchored to the rack with heavy wiring, completely out of reach without help. I knew what I had to do.

I flagged down a sales associate — she arrived with a key on a lanyard, the quiet authority of someone who handles precious things all day. I asked for the black leather three-quarter length coat with the faux fur collar, and she freed it from the rack with practiced ease. She walked me to the dressing room, coat in hand, and I stepped inside.

I slid my arms in and felt it instantly — the kiss of genuine leather against my skin, impossibly supple and luxurious, like nothing I had ever touched before. The weight of it settled across my shoulders with authority, substantial and real, grounding me. It draped perfectly, hitting just below the knee with a fluid, commanding presence. But then I lifted my hand to the collar, and everything shifted. The faux fur was butter-soft under my fingertips, a whisper against my skin. I turned slowly toward the mirror, and my breath caught. The coat framed my face beautifully, the fur catching the warm dressing room light, creating a halo of texture and warmth. The structured leather of the body held me like armor, powerful and uncompromising, while the collar softened everything, added drama and elegance in equal measure. I stood there, turning slightly, watching how the coat moved with me, how it fell, how it promised. In that moment, in that mirror, I wasn’t just looking at an outfit — I was looking at a version of myself I had been searching for. Confident. Bold. Unstoppable. The fitted black dress, the tall black stiletto boots — they were already there in my mind, completing the picture. But this coat? This coat was the declaration. This was the armor I needed. This was the one. I knew it with absolute certainty, the kind of knowing that doesn’t require debate or second thoughts. My hands lingered on the fur collar, and I smiled at my reflection. Some moments arrive fully formed, and you just have to say yes.

There was never really any debate. I had to have it. The sales associate walked me to the register, removed the tags from the coat, and folded it with care. I pulled out my credit card, paid without a second thought, and walked out of Marshall Field’s with a wrapped in plastic with the Marshall Field’s logo. It felt like a trophy. Some purchases are just transactions. This one was a memory.

I sank into my seat on the Red Line, the city blurring past while I cradled my new coat in my arms—a heavy black leather three-quarter length with a soft faux fur collar that still held the chill of the store’s air. By the time I stepped off at my stop and walked toward home, the weight of it had settled over me, solid and certain, like armor I had been meant to wear all along. Winter no longer felt like something to brace for, but a season waiting to be met head-on, and in that coat I knew I had found exactly what I went looking for: warmth, yes, but also the version of myself I had been hoping to see.
