Welcome back to Aisha’s Fashion Faves, where my vanity doubles as a little beauty lab and you get a front-row seat to everything that actually earns a permanent spot on it. Today, I’m talking about three makeup loves that keep me camera-ready, brunch-ready, and “I only had five minutes” ready: MAC, Bare Minerals, and NARS.

I think of my makeup collection as a curated closet for my face. I don’t want 50 versions of the same product; I want a few formulas I can trust on a Monday work call and a Saturday night out. These three brands show up for me in different ways — MAC for those classic, polished moments, Bare Minerals for breathable, real-skin days, and NARS for when I want that “effortless but definitely planned” glamour (especially after a certain makeover experience at Nordstrom that I’ll never forget).

MAC: The Classic That Never Left My Makeup Bag

MAC was one of the first brands that made me feel like makeup could be both professional and playful. Their counters always feel like the fashion kid’s art studio: sleek, bold, and full of colors that dare you to step out of your comfort zone just a little.

When I reach for MAC, I’m usually going for something reliable and refined. Think makeup that photographs beautifully, holds up through a busy day, and still feels like me when I catch my reflection. I gravitate toward their more wearable shades — those “my lips but better” tones, soft neutrals for the eyes, and flattering, everyday-friendly finishes that don’t scream “I spent an hour blending,” even if I secretly did.

One thing I appreciate about MAC is how they seem to understand undertones and depth of color. Shades don’t just sit on top of my skin; they work with it. That makes a huge difference when you want polished makeup that still feels appropriate at the office, at dinner, or on a casual coffee run. I tend to build looks that are easy to dial up or down: a neutral eye that can handle both a nude lip at 10 a.m. and a deeper lip at 8 p.m., without having to redo everything.

My MAC favorites fall into the “wardrobe staples” category: those pieces you don’t even think about anymore because they just work. I keep them close for days when I can’t experiment or fuss — I just need to look pulled together, fast.

Bare Minerals: When I Want My Skin to Breathe

On days when my skin is the main character and makeup is more of a supporting role, I reach for Bare Minerals. If MAC is my chic blazer, Bare Minerals is my favorite soft tee — still cute, still intentional, but I can actually forget I’m wearing it.

I love Bare Minerals for creating looks that feel almost skincare-adjacent: light coverage that evens me out without hiding everything, soft color that enhances instead of overpowering, and textures that don’t make my skin feel trapped underneath a layer of product. On long days or in warmer weather, that breathable feel matters more to me than a totally full-coverage, airbrushed look.

My approach with Bare Minerals is very “weekend brunch meets quick Zoom meeting.” A little base where I need it, a soft flush on the cheeks, maybe a hint of glow, and I’m done. It’s the kind of makeup I can apply in natural light with my phone propped against a candle jar and still feel confident walking out the door.

What keeps Bare Minerals in my curated favorites is how wearable it is across seasons and moods. Some makeup feels like an event; this feels like a habit. I can layer a bit more if I want polish or keep it sheer when I’m in a jeans-and-sneakers mood. Either way, I still recognize my own skin when I look in the mirror, and that’s important to me.

NARS: Effortless Glam and My Nordstrom Makeover Moment

NARS is my “we’re going somewhere” brand. Whenever I want to feel subtly glamorous — not overdone, just elevated — I find myself pulling out my NARS favorites. The brand has this way of balancing sophistication with a little edge, and I love that combination.

My connection to NARS got a serious upgrade after a makeover experience at Nordstrom. There’s something about sitting in that chair, having a NARS artist really look at your face, ask about your routine, your comfort level, your everyday life, and then create a look that feels tailored to you. It was like watching my own features get gently dialed up, not transformed into someone else.

What stood out during that makeover was how wearable everything looked, even under store lighting. The colors felt intentional but not intense, the finishes complemented my skin instead of masking it, and the whole look was something I could imagine recreating at home without three hours and a ring light. For me, that’s the real test: if I can’t see myself doing a simplified version on a regular day, it doesn’t make my curated favorites list.

Since then, I reach for NARS when I want that chic, put-together face that still feels very real-life wearable. Think: soft-definition eyes, flattering flush, and lips that look polished but not fussy. It’s the brand I trust for date nights, events, or any time I know photos will be involved and I want my makeup to read “effortless” even though I definitely put thought into it.

How I Curate My Beauty Favorites

If you’ve been following Aisha’s Fashion Faves for a while, you know I treat my makeup stash a bit like I treat my wardrobe: edited, intentional, and full of pieces that can mix and match. MAC, Bare Minerals, and NARS all pass the same little test in my head before they earn “favorite” status.

1. Is it wearable? I love beautiful packaging and bold shades as much as anyone, but if I can’t see myself wearing something to work, to a casual dinner, or on an everyday outing, it usually doesn’t stay. Wearable doesn’t have to mean boring — it just means it fits into my real life.

2. Does it play well with others? My MAC staples need to work with my Bare Minerals base. My NARS favorites should look good next to my everyday neutrals. I want to be able to build a look quickly by mixing brands without worrying that one product will overpower everything else.

3. Can I recommend it honestly? If I wouldn’t feel comfortable telling a friend, “Yes, you could absolutely wear this to your next event or just on a normal day,” then it doesn’t make it onto my blog as a true favorite. I want my recommendations to feel like advice from that one friend who will tell you if something looks amazing and if it’s going to sit untouched in your drawer.

MAC checks the box for polish and performance, Bare Minerals checks the box for breathable, real-skin comfort, and NARS checks the box for special-occasion-meets-everyday-glam. Together, they cover almost every mood and moment in my makeup life.

Wrapping It Up

My makeup routine changes with my calendar, my outfits, and honestly, my energy levels. But these three brands — MAC, Bare Minerals, and NARS — have settled into my collection in a way that feels steady and dependable. MAC gives me those polished, timeless staples; Bare Minerals keeps things soft, breathable, and skin-first; and NARS brings the “I tried, but not too hard” glam, especially after that Nordstrom makeover showed me just how wearable their looks can be.

If you’re building your own curated beauty wardrobe, start by thinking about how you actually live: your workdays, your weekends, your “I can’t be bothered but still want to look awake” mornings. Then choose products that support that life, not just whatever is trending for five minutes. For me, that’s meant leaning into the reliability of MAC, the lightness of Bare Minerals, and the chic versatility of NARS.

As always, take what resonates, leave what doesn’t, and make your own rules. Makeup should feel like a fun extension of your personal style, not a strict dress code. And if you ever find yourself in a makeover chair at Nordstrom with a NARS artist, lean in — you might just walk away with a new favorite look too.
